I bought my YP-R1 about 2 weeks ago and used it ever since. Here is a small review for that gadget.

What I wanted was the perfect mp3 player with long battery life, maybe with some extra features. First, I was thinking about iPod Nano. But the price is very high, and YR-R1 seemed to be a good alternative. It is an upper class gadget with lots of options, radio, video etc… It costs about 30%-40% less then the iPod sibling with the similar list of features. In this review, I will sometimes take iPod Nano as a reference, just because it is a good and known gadget.

What I like

[+] music quality is great. Especially beats are pure pleasure;
[+] bundled earphones are of superb quality. To buy such earphones alone may cost about 50 Eur;
[+] price for that kind of quality is superb;
[+] touchscreen works great;
[+] feature-rich: video, music, radio, pictures, texts, voice rec, memo, bluetooth;
[+] flat, easy to hold in my jeans or any pocket;
[+] light (but heavier then iPod Nano);
[+] durable metallic shell;
[+] hard to scratch;
[+] long battery life makes “low battery problem” go away.

What I dislike

[-] radio has just some preset FM Regions, i.e. Europe is missing;
[-] PC interaction must be setup manually; first time I connected it to PC, it did not work. It requested the newest version of MS Media Player, although I was using Linux;
[-] no internal speakers;
[-] no easy way to navigate between songs. I must use ‘block’ to prevent random screen pressing. Sometimes I want to skip the song: now I have to “un – block” the gadget and find the ‘NEXT song’ arrow on the screen;
[-] I need this “special USB cable” to connect and to charge my player. Its a burden for me to always have it with me, would be great if it had “USB male connector” and no cables whatsoever;
[-] need extra adapter to charge from electrical grid. You need to buy one. Per default, it needs a charging USB slot;
[-] no “special” external hardware like “iPod nano” has. Many firms build gadgets for nano this days… With iPod, you can have high-quality speakers designed for iPod. It looks great together. With my gadget, you also can have this speakers, but there is just no slot for my player, so it will lye around. Lesser aesthetic experience…
[-] lesser design choices. With iPod nano there are many more colors to choose from. Sometimes we just want it to look nice with the jacket :)
[-] it has clock, but no alarm function;

[++] This gadget is good if you…

[v] want great quality and affordable price;
[v] want to be never bothered by “low battery problem” again;
[v] want to have media player which is hard to break or even scratch;
[v] have no great earphones;
[v] like touchscreen;
[v] want many features, like small video player, radio, etc;
[v] Ok with not having “status symbol = iPod” :)
[v] are not a perfectionist;

[--] This gadget is not that good if you…

[v] want it perfect. IPod maybe better then;
[v] want other great gadgets for you media player. Also ipod;
[v] price is not an issue; = iPod;
[v] price is very much an issue; Buy something under 30 Eur, There are also great players to have, just not the upper class;
[v] want perfect usability; This Samsung has some issues, so, maybe iPod, or something else;
[v] want speakers in your M-PLayer;

Conclusion

After two weeks of using Samsung YP-R1 Media Player, I think it was the right choice for me. It is near to perfect audio player, any time I want music it has enough charge left, after some tuning it works great with my PC, and, it looks just great. For that price if have nothing to complain about.

      Hi,

      find the System->Settings->PC Connection and make sure it is set to MSC. That is a normal USB mode. After that, try to connect and expect the Drive or Directory to pop up. If it doesn’t help, let me know and give me some details like what the player writes and what kind of OS you use.

      Good luck

      Hallo Karun,

      there must be an Adapter for electricity bundled with the player. It is an extension to the very same USB cable you use to charge from PC. If you have none, ask the Shop which sold you the player;)
